James Concagh

The artists unique approach to painting comes from the fact that he graduated as a sculptor from Chelsea School of Art in London in 1980 and at the National School of Art, Dublin in 1984. Concagh's interest in sculpture was such that he developed techniques in welding, fibre-glass and woodwork. James also worked with mixed media techniques which included making cement structures and mobile sculptures.

Although his first exhibitions in Brazil involved three-dimensional forms, James was soon to become very influenced by the intense light around the walls of the city. These textures fascinated him. When Concagh eventually turned to painting in 1995, he did not make the connection between his interest in textures right away. It was only in 1999 when Concagh made the series "Vagos" that he realized that it was possible to take full advantage of his background as a sculptor to explore abstract forms using textured surfaces as opposed to any painterly style. James has had fourteen solo exhibitions in Brazil since 1990
